A scammer clones an established broker's name and MC number, then routes you to a phone number and email that aren't actually theirs. Because the authority they're impersonating is genuinely active, a quick lookup on the name looks perfectly clean. The lie is in the contact details.

How the spoofing scam works

The scammer poses as a well-known broker, often using caller-ID spoofing so the incoming call even displays a plausible number. They send a rate confirmation on lookalike letterhead, book you on a real-sounding load, and give you a call-back number and remittance email that route to them — not the real broker. You haul, you invoice the number you were given, and the trail leads nowhere. The real broker never knew the load existed.

The tells

• The call-back number doesn't match FMCSA's registered number for that broker.
• The email domain is a lookalike (extra letters, different TLD) rather than the company's real domain.
• Payment/remittance instructions differ from what's on the broker's official record.
• Urgency to dispatch before you can verify anything.

How to protect yourself
